How Cat Pomorski Blended Metallurgy Expertise with 3D Printing Innovation at Markforged
Cat Pomorski joined Markforged in June 2018 as an Associate Application Engineer in the Watertown office. A Penn State graduate in Materials Science & Engineering with a focus on metallurgy, Cat brings a deep love for metals to her work with the company’s Metal X 3‑D printer, helping customers unlock new applications for Markforged technology.
Why did you join Markforged?
During college I was captivated by 3‑D printing, even completing a thesis on the subject and interning at UTAS (now Collins Aerospace), where I printed innovative parts. Markforged’s breakthrough composite printers—and the unique market position they offer—caught my attention. As someone whose background is in metallurgy, the opportunity to combine my passion for metals with cutting‑edge additive manufacturing was irresistible.
What has been your proudest moment at Markforged?
The most rewarding experience is tackling a complex, never‑before‑printed part geometry, especially in metal. The “aha” moment when the part comes out flawless is incredibly satisfying.
What are three words to describe your team?
Hardworking, outgoing, nerds.
What is one of the biggest challenges you face as an application engineer?
The greatest challenge is customer education. No other company prints strong composites—or metal—like we do. We must guide customers through the nuances of a new manufacturing process, explaining what works, what doesn’t, and how to achieve reliable parts.
3‑D printing is its own distinct process; there is always more to learn and new technologies emerging.
Do you have any advice for someone who wants to join Markforged as an application engineer?
Develop strong public‑speaking skills. An application engineer must communicate technical details and real‑world use cases to prospects, translating customer needs into product capabilities. Practice this art, and then apply—Markforged is always on the lookout for talented individuals.
Tell me about someone who has inspired you?
My college professor, who guided my additive manufacturing research, and my peers in material science were pivotal. Their encouragement helped shape my career path.
What's your favorite thing that you’ve printed with the unlimited 3‑D printing you have access to at work?
While most of my prints serve customers, I once fabricated a 17‑4 PH stainless steel ring—proof that we can produce intricate, functional pieces. (We focus on tools, not toys.)
What is your favorite event that Markforged has hosted?
Our annual Global Partner Summit—this year in Austin—brings the entire sales organization and partners together for knowledge sharing and growth. It’s a highlight of the year.
What do you like to do outside of work?
Outside the lab, I love skiing, hiking, and traveling the world.
