Qomu: QuickLogic's USB‑Sized MCU + eFPGA Dev Kit for Edge IoT & AI
QuickLogic has unveiled the Qomu development kit, a compact, open‑source SoC that combines an Arm Cortex‑M4F MCU with an embedded FPGA, all fitting into a standard USB Type‑A port.
Designed to support QuickLogic's open reconfigurable computing (QORC) initiative, Qomu is compatible with a broad spectrum of vendor‑backed open‑source tools—including Zephyr, FreeRTOS, SymbiFlow, and Renode—empowering developers to prototype and deploy applications from virtually any environment.
The Qomu kit places the EOS S3 Arm Cortex‑M4F and eFPGA into a single, plug‑and‑play form factor. The MCU streamlines software development, while the eFPGA accelerates or offloads computational tasks, implements custom IP, or provides glue logic—all without the need for additional hardware.

While the kit supports diverse use cases across multiple industries, it shines in edge IoT scenarios that demand ultra‑low power consumption coupled with AI or machine‑learning capabilities.

QORC has cultivated a fully open‑source, vendor‑supported toolchain for Qomu. SymbiFlow supplies synthesis, place‑and‑route, and bitstream generation, while nMigen offers a Python‑to‑FPGA design flow. Developers also benefit from Zephyr, FreeRTOS, and Renode for operating system and emulation support.
According to Mao Wang, Senior Director of Marketing at QuickLogic, 'The Qomu dev kit is a milestone for the industry in many ways. It packs an incredible amount of functionality in the size of a USB port.' Wang added that the kit was co‑designed with renowned open‑source engineer Sean Cross, underscoring its commitment to community collaboration.
