Infineon Introduces the TLE985x Embedded Power Series for Automotive Motor Control
During the recent Embedded World trade show, Infineon Technologies unveiled its latest Embedded Power IC family—the TLE985x series. These AEC Q‑100‑qualified H‑bridge drivers deliver fully integrated motor‑control solutions for 2‑phase DC and single‑phase brushless‑DC motors, enabling automotive OEMs to replace traditional relays in low‑end applications like sunroof and window lifts.
Replacing relays with MOSFETs dramatically cuts component count and cost, while the integrated, calibrated current‑sense amplifier and PWM control let designers tailor motor currents precisely. The result is a smaller, quieter system that also benefits from reduced electromagnetic noise.
Each TLE985x chip houses an ARM Cortex‑M0 core alongside motor‑control, power‑supply, and communication peripherals. Two built‑in ADCs monitor temperature and battery voltage, and four additional analog inputs accept raw battery‑level signals—eliminating the need for external dividers or shutdown transistors. Dual full‑duplex UARTs with LIN capability simplify vehicle‑network integration.
The TLE985x’s adaptive MOSFET driver represents a breakthrough: a self‑calibrating algorithm adjusts gate drive currents to match each MOSFET’s switching characteristics. This dual optimization reduces electromagnetic emissions—thanks to gentler slew rates—and cuts power loss by shortening dead times.
The family comprises five variants, ranging from 48 KB to 96 KB of flash and operating up to 175 °C junction temperature. Depending on the application, one can select from uni‑ or bi‑directional half‑bridge drivers. Because all TLE985x devices share Infineon’s proven hardware‑and‑software platform with the TLE984x, TLE986x, and TLE987x lines, designers can reap significant reuse benefits. Each IC is housed in a compact 7 × 7 mm leadless VQFN package.
