Renesas Expands Synergy Series with Low‑Power S5D3 MCUs Featuring Advanced Security
Renesas Electronics extends its high‑integration Renesas Synergy S5 microcontroller series by adding the entry‑level S5D3 MCU Group. The four new S5D3 MCUs complement the mid‑range S5D5 and high‑end S5D9 groups, sharing core features: a 120 MHz Arm Cortex‑M4, advanced security, and general‑purpose peripherals that streamline design of cost‑effective, low‑power IoT endpoints. They target industrial, building automation, office equipment, smart metering, and home appliances that use capacitive‑touch HMI.
The Renesas Synergy Software Package powers S5D3 MCUs with HAL drivers, application frameworks, and a real‑time operating system. Designers can use Renesas Synergy development environments—e² studio or IAR Embedded Workbench—to build and customize solutions. Built on a 40 nm process, each S5D3 MCU includes a secure cryptographic engine (SCE7) with key protection, safeguarding boot code and securing IoT endpoint communication via a root of trust. This eliminates the need for external security modules, reducing BOM cost. SCE7 provides hardware acceleration for RSA, DSA, AES, ECC, SHA, and a true random number generator (TRNG), enabling secure cloud connectivity. Power performance: 100 µA/MHz active, 1.3 µA standby, 900 nA on VBATT for the integrated RTC—ideal for low‑power, high‑performance applications.
Memory: 512 KB flash and 256 KB SRAM (2:1 ratio) supports heavy communication stacks, while an 8 KB data flash offers higher endurance than competitors. Analog: two 12‑bit ADCs, 2‑channel 12‑bit DAC, high‑speed 6‑channel comparator, temperature sensor, 6‑channel programmable gain amplifier. Timers: 13 independent 32‑bit general‑purpose timers. Interfaces: USB, CAN, I2C, SPI, SDHI, SSI.
