Renesas Launches First 4‑Lane MIPI‑CSI2 LCD Video Controller for Automotive Full‑HD Displays

Renesas Electronics, a global semiconductor leader, has unveiled the automotive industry’s first full‑HD 1080p LCD video controller that incorporates a 4‑lane (or dual‑2‑lane) MIPI‑CSI2 input. The RAA278842 delivers up to 1 Gbps per lane, enabling seamless connectivity with the latest generation of automotive cameras, application processors and GPUs.

Beyond MIPI‑CSI2, the controller supports a 150 MHz single‑channel OpenLDI interface and a range of video interfaces for LCD panels up to 1920 × 1080. Its 10‑bit per color processing engine delivers near‑zero latency and superior image quality, while integrated diagnostics can detect frozen or corrupted video streams and provide a direct path for rear‑camera feeds, dramatically enhancing display reliability.

Because some application processors require several seconds to boot, the RAA278842 can render a camera image on an LCD in under 500 ms, satisfying the fast‑boot requirements of many OEMs. When paired with the RAA278843, which offers a traditional BT.656 output, both controllers can work in concert with the vehicle’s main processor to monitor camera and SoC/GPU video data.

During ignition, while the instrument cluster is initializing, the controller can display the manufacturer’s logo or live camera footage. Its on‑screen display feature can emulate traditional tell‑tale lamp checks, and the system meets FMVSS‑111 safety regulations by showing the blind‑spot area within two seconds of engaging reverse gear.

These capabilities make the RAA278842 and RAA278843 ideal for central infotainment displays, head units, instrument clusters, head‑up displays, and mirror‑replacement applications that underpin advanced driver‑assist systems.
