Renesas Launches Ultra‑Compact 8.2‑mm Creepage Photocouplers to Shrink Industrial Automation and Solar Inverter Designs

Renesas Electronics Corp. has unveiled a family of five 8.2‑mm creepage photocouplers, positioning itself as the industry leader in producing the smallest isolation devices for industrial automation and solar inverters.

The RV1S92xxA and RV1S22xxA models feature a 2.5‑mm package width, cutting PCB mounting area by 35% compared to competing couplers. They provide 5,000‑Vrms reinforced isolation, a 50 kV/µs CMR noise rejection rate, and high‑speed signal handling, safeguarding low‑voltage microcontrollers and I/O devices from high‑voltage circuits.

These compact couplers enable tighter equipment footprints, increase robotic arm axes, and support the zero‑energy house concept by allowing more solar modules to fit into limited spaces.

Renesas’ RV1S9260A, a 15‑Mbps communications coupler, and the RV1S9213A intelligent power module driver are the first photocouplers to adopt the tiny LSSO5 package with a 0.65‑mm pin pitch—half the pitch of traditional packages. With a 2.1‑mm package height, they can be mounted on the PCB’s backside, freeing valuable top‑side real estate.

The RV1S22xxA line, also featuring an 8.2‑mm creepage distance, shares the same 2.5‑mm width and 2.1‑mm height. Offered in LSSOP packages with a 1.30‑mm pin pitch, the RV1S2281A and RV1S2211A provide DC‑to‑DC and low‑DC input transistor outputs, while the RV1S2285A delivers an AC‑input, transistor‑output solution.

All five devices meet rigorous safety standards: UL 61800‑5‑1 for motor‑drive equipment, UL 61010‑2‑201 for control devices such as PLCs, and are rated for 200‑V and 400‑V systems with reinforced insulation. They operate reliably in high‑temperature, harsh environments.

These cutting‑edge photocouplers are now available through Renesas’s global distributor network.
