congatec Unveils 100 W Ecosystem for High‑Performance Embedded Edge and Micro Servers

congatec introduced its new 100 W ecosystem for embedded edge and micro servers at CIIF 2019 in Shanghai. The platform is engineered to deliver 65‑100 W performance in COM Express Type 7 Server‑on‑Module (SoM) form factors, enabling cost‑effective scalability for demanding edge workloads. It initially supports the newly launched conga‑B7E3 modules, which house 3 GHz dual‑die AMD EPYC Embedded 3000 processors capable of a maximum TDP of 100 W, up to 16 cores and 32 threads. These first‑of‑their‑kind 100 W SoMs, measuring 95 × 125 mm in the COM Express Basic layout, can be fitted with advanced heat spreaders and heat‑pipe adapters to provide efficient cooling in ultra‑low‑profile 1U servers. By eliminating rotating fans, the design delivers exceptional robustness for IoT and Industry 4.0 edge deployments.

Use cases span 5G telecom cloudlets, Industry 4.0 servers, smart robot‑cell platforms with collaborative robotics, autonomous logistics vehicles equipped with high‑speed vision, and other situational‑awareness sensor suites. The ecosystem also supports virtualized on‑premise environments in harsh settings, handling tasks such as industrial routing, tactile‑Internet, firewall security, intrusion detection, and VPN services—optionally paired with real‑time control loops and neural‑network AI inference.

Alongside the cooling innovations, congatec offers starter kits featuring two carrier boards—conga‑X7EVAL and conga‑STX7—each providing four 10 GbE interfaces and SFP+ cages compatible with both copper and fiber‑optic cabling. These kits illustrate rack‑mounted and boxed edge server designs that can be tailored to customer specifications. Comprehensive hardware‑engineering services round out the 100 W ecosystem, ensuring seamless integration for embedded edge server platforms.

Software capabilities highlight real‑time configuration to eliminate latencies caused by processor‑side TDP management and robust RAS (reliability, availability, serviceability) features across all AMD EPYC Embedded 3000 processors. These enable remote monitoring, management, and maintenance that mirror commercial‑grade data‑center operations, optimizing total cost of ownership in distributed deployments. Edge applications benefit from integrated virtualization and cutting‑edge security, including Secure Boot, Secure Memory Encryption (SME), Secure Encrypted Virtualization (SEV), and a secure migration channel between SEV‑capable systems. IPsec support with integrated crypto acceleration ensures that even administrators cannot access encrypted virtual machines, a critical requirement for high‑security edge services that must support multi‑vendor Industry 4.0 automation while guarding against sabotage attempts.
