NVIDIA GTC Unveils Jetson AGX Orin: 200 TOPS in the Smallest Edge AI Supercomputer

At NVIDIA’s Global Technology Conference (GTC), the company introduced the Jetson AGX Orin, a compact yet formidable AI supercomputer designed for robotics, autonomous systems, medical devices, and a range of embedded edge applications.

Leveraging the Ampere architecture, the Jetson AGX Orin delivers 200 trillion operations per second—equivalent to a server‑grade GPU—while retaining the same form factor and pin compatibility as its predecessor, the Jetson AGX Xavier. The result is a six‑fold increase in processing power packaged into a palm‑sized module.

With the full NVIDIA AI software stack fully accelerated, developers can deploy the most complex models required for edge AI challenges, including natural language understanding, 3D perception, and multisensor fusion.

“Robotics and embedded computing are reshaping manufacturing, healthcare, retail, transportation, and smart cities, driving a growing demand for high‑performance processing,” said Deepu Talla, Vice President and General Manager of Embedded and Edge Computing at NVIDIA. “Jetson AGX Orin meets this need, empowering the 850,000 Jetson developers and 6,000+ companies building commercial products to create autonomous machines and edge AI solutions that were once beyond reach.”

The module integrates an Ampere GPU, Arm Cortex‑A78AE CPUs, and next‑generation deep‑learning and vision accelerators. High‑speed interfaces, expanded memory bandwidth, and multimodal sensor support enable multiple concurrent AI pipelines.

Software and Ecosystem Support

Jetson AGX Orin customers gain access to the CUDA‑X accelerated computing stack, JetPack SDK, and NVIDIA’s latest tools, including cloud‑native workflows. Pre‑trained models from the NVIDIA NGC catalog are pre‑optimized for fine‑tuning with the TAO toolkit, slashing time and cost for production‑grade AI deployments. Cloud‑native technologies also simplify updates throughout a product’s lifecycle.

The Jetson partner ecosystem offers cameras, multimodal sensors, carrier boards, hardware design services, AI and system software, developer tools, and custom software development—creating a comprehensive environment for rapid innovation.

Industry Impact

“AI advances are accelerating the robotics market,” noted Jim McGregor, Principal Analyst at TIRIAS Research. “NVIDIA’s leadership in AI, combined with a robust ecosystem and end‑to‑end solutions, enables unprecedented progress in autonomous mobile robots across agriculture, manufacturing, healthcare, and smart cities.”

Key software frameworks include NVIDIA Isaac Sim on Omniverse for robotics, NVIDIA Clara Holoscan SDK for healthcare, and NVIDIA DRIVE for autonomous driving. The latest Isaac release offers enhanced ROS support, while Omniverse Replicator and Isaac GEMs provide synthetic data generation and hardware‑accelerated packages for ROS developers.

Real‑Time Sensing for Medical Devices

Jetson AGX Orin powers Clara Holoscan, a computing platform that enables developers to build software‑defined medical devices capable of low‑latency streaming and real‑time AI decision support. This capability is essential for robotic surgery, endoscopy, and diagnostic imaging, allowing devices to process physics, imaging, and visualization data on the edge while delegating more complex tasks to data centers.

Transportation AI Assistants

The DRIVE AGX Orin, also based on Ampere, powers NVIDIA DRIVE concierge and DRIVE chauffeur—AI platforms that redefine in‑car passenger experience and enable safe autonomous driving. Global automakers, new energy vehicle startups, and shuttle operators are leveraging its high‑performance AI compute for next‑generation intelligent mobility solutions.

The Jetson AGX Orin module and developer kit will ship in Q1 2022.
