Connext DDS 5.3 Now Live: The First Connectivity Platform for Industrial IoT Systems of Systems

RTI today announces the general availability of Connext DDS 5.3, the industry’s first connectivity software designed specifically for architecting Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) systems of systems.

In this release, we unveil several features that empower customers to build secure, scalable systems aligned with the layered‑databus architecture and to implement these patterns across diverse industries.

Interoperable Security

The Object Management Group (OMG) adopted the DDS Security v1.0 specification last year. Connext DDS Secure is the first DDS implementation to fully comply with the new standard, delivering the usability, performance, and security that IIoT demands.

For example, energy utilities that manage load‑balancing microgrids rely on equipment from multiple vendors. These critical assets must communicate seamlessly while protecting sensitive data from external threats. DDS Security provides heterogeneous interoperability and robust security to meet that challenge.

Connext DDS also extends security to all core runtime services, including the Routing, Persistence, and Recording services, ensuring end‑to‑end protection across the entire stack.

Historical Data Query

IIoT deployments generate massive data streams that are typically published and consumed in real time. Temporary data, such as a patient’s vital signs recorded over the past 24 hours, is often cached locally to reduce network load.

When an alarm is triggered, clinicians can request only the relevant slice of historical data—say, heart‑rate measurements from the preceding minutes—without overloading the network. Connext DDS 5.3 delivers this selective query capability, allowing devices or intelligent software to retrieve exactly the information needed.

Seamless Device Mobility

Industrial systems historically relied on static IP addresses, requiring manual reconfiguration when a device moved between networks. This rigidity hampers productivity, especially in emerging sectors like autonomous vehicles.

Connext DDS automatically maintains connectivity to the databus as devices roam across cellular, Wi‑Fi, or enterprise networks, eliminating the need for custom mobility logic in application code.

Web Application Interoperability

Leveraging the Web‑enabled DDS specification, RTI Web Integration Service exposes a RESTful API that allows web applications to tap into the Connext Databus. This integration makes it straightforward to build dashboards and visualizations that consume real‑time data.

Examples:

• A clinician can monitor patient status from a web app on any device.
• A fleet operator can track autonomous vehicles through an intuitive web interface.
