Teknor Apex Launches Durable, Scratch‑Resistant Polyolefin Capstocks for WPC Decking

Teknor Apex Co., Pawtucket, R.I., has introduced a new line of weatherable polyolefin capstocks designed for the outer, or “cap,” layers of dark‑colored wood‑plastic composite (WPC) decking. These compounds promise superior durability and scratch resistance compared with the most commonly used alternatives, while helping manufacturers keep production costs in check.

In QUV accelerated weathering tests lasting 5,000 hours, the Weatherguard WG‑9000 Series capstocks showed a color shift of less than 0.5 Delta E for dark brown finishes. Compared with a standard competitor, the WG‑9000 series delivers five‑ to ten‑fold increases in elongation and impact strength, with only a 15 % reduction in tensile strength.

The Weatherguard WG‑9015 LG grade is engineered as a 50 % concentrate that blends with fractional‑melt‑index polyethylene, offering manufacturers a cost‑effective option that still delivers high performance. For projects that require a 100 % capstock, the WG‑9003 LG variant is available and sold pre‑colored to match the client’s desired palette.

While many capstocks incorporate ionomer resin to enhance scratch resistance, the WG‑9015 LG grade achieves superior scratch protection when blended with polyethylene—outperforming similar compounds that contain 20 % ionomer—without the added expense of that polymer.

WPC decking, a mix of wood flour and polyolefin plastics, is rapidly gaining traction as a low‑maintenance, long‑lasting alternative to treated wood. “The cost‑containing nature of our new Weatherguard capstocks gives WPC an edge over traditional wood in both performance and price,” says John Macaluso, industry manager for building & construction at Teknor Apex’s Vinyl Division. “As recycled content becomes more common in the deck core, the quality and durability of the capstock become even more critical to achieving the aesthetic and functional benefits of WPC.”

Teknor Apex’s WG‑9000 Series complements an extensive range of capstock solutions—including products for PVC decking, railings, fencing, siding, windows, and doors—available on a custom basis. Formulations can be tailored to specific color, gloss, and performance requirements, ensuring each deck meets the exacting standards of modern builders and homeowners.
