Polykemi Unveils $12 Million U.S. Compounding Plant, the Company’s Largest Investment Yet
Polykemi Group AB has announced a $12 million investment to construct its first U.S. compounding facility in Gastonia, North Carolina. The 50,000‑sq‑ft plant—expandable to 100,000 sq‑ft—will host two production lines and is slated to begin operations in the second quarter of 2022. This marks the biggest single investment in Polykemi’s history and sets the stage for further growth across North America.
Polykemi, a family‑owned specialist in thermoplastic compounds, has been a trusted supplier across Europe and Asia for decades. Since 2014, the company has extended its reach into North America through a partnership with Omni Plastics in Evansville, Indiana. Its product line—spanning nearly every thermoplastic except PVC—includes flagship families such as Scancomp PP HC, a high‑crystallinity, fiber‑reinforced blend aimed at replacing 30% of glass‑reinforced nylon 6 and PBT, and Scancomp PP HBK, a high‑gloss, UV‑stable formulation designed to substitute ABS.
“We are truly delighted by this milestone,” said Polykemi Inc.’s CEO, Johan Hugoson. “The new U.S. plant enhances our presence and unlocks new opportunities across the American market. By operating facilities on three continents, we maintain strict quality control and consistent color across all raw materials, whether virgin or recycled. This enables us to collaborate more closely with customers whose production is distributed globally.”
Polykemi Inc. will manufacture the exact same material in the United States as it does in Europe and Asia, ensuring identical performance standards. Direct shipments from the North Carolina plant will reduce lead times, lower transportation costs, and minimize environmental impact for U.S. customers. Hugoson emphasized that this investment “paves the way for Polykemi Group’s continued growth and establishes it as a distinct player in the American plastic compounds market.”
