Integrated Circuits: Fundamentals of Digital Logic Gates

Logic Gates: The Fundamental Building Blocks of Digital Systems
A logic gate is a fundamental electronic component that implements Boolean logic functions, transforming binary input signals into a single binary output. Each gate operates on discrete voltage levels that represent logical HIGH (1) and LOW (0) states.
AND Gate
The AND gate outputs a logical 1 only when every one of its inputs is 1; otherwise, it outputs 0. This behavior mirrors the logical conjunction operation.
OR Gate
The OR gate produces a logical 1 if at least one of its inputs is 1; it outputs 0 only when all inputs are 0, reflecting the logical disjunction.
NOT Gate (Inverter)
The NOT gate has a single input and a single output that is the logical complement of the input. An input of 0 yields an output of 1, and vice versa.
Universal Gates: NAND & NOR
Both the NAND and NOR gates are considered universal because each can be combined to realize any Boolean function. A NAND gate combines an AND operation with a subsequent inversion, while a NOR gate merges an OR operation with inversion.
These gates form the backbone of complex digital logic, enabling the design of arithmetic circuits, memory elements, and microprocessor architectures.
