The Power of a Clear, Concise Vision: Driving Leadership Success
One of the first responsibilities of leadership—whether it’s guiding an organization, company, team, or nation—is to articulate a simple, clear vision of the future.
Visionary leaders throughout history have accomplished this in diverse ways, often distilling their aspirations into concise statements that enable everyone to see the desired future state.
Examples include:
“Give me liberty or give me death.”
– Patrick Henry, United States Revolutionary War leader, 1776
“We shall never surrender.”
– Winston Churchill, England prime minister, 1941
“By the end of the decade, we will put a man on the moon.”
– John F. Kennedy, United States president, 1962
“A computer on every desk and in every home.”
– Bill Gates, Microsoft chairman and chief executive officer, 1980
Gates’ vision of a computer in every office and home, despite Microsoft not producing computers at the time, proved prescient. Today, more than 25 years later, computers are ubiquitous and essential tools for work and daily life. Microsoft’s success and influence attest to the power of a bold, clear vision.
In the realm of plant reliability and maintenance, a crystal‑clear vision is equally vital. At Cargill, our Maintenance and Reliability Center of Excellence champions the phrase “Doing the Right Work Right,” encapsulating our commitment to identify the precise solutions for critical equipment failures and to execute them efficiently and with top quality.
We also employ a global proactive maintenance model that is consistently communicated and practiced. Our Center’s logo symbolizes the balance we strive for: delivering quality products on time while safeguarding healthy, reliable assets.
- Produce quality products on time for our customers.
- Maintain healthy, reliable assets and equipment.
We ensure this vision is visible across all plants, using posters, flyers, training workshops, business updates, and company events. Repetition keeps the vision alive and integrated into everyday operations.
I am also an active member of the Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (SMRP), a non‑profit founded in 1992 that serves maintenance and reliability experts. SMRP’s tagline, “A Society By Practitioners for Practitioners,” reflects its collaborative ethos. The organization’s certification vision—“a CMRP in every facility”—is ambitious yet clear, driving continuous improvement worldwide.
What is your shared vision for advancing maintenance and reliability at your organization? Reflect on it.
Leaders, a clear, concise vision is essential for driving success in maintenance and reliability.
