Frequency Response, Range, and Resolution in Motor Testing: What You Need to Know
In the world of electrical motor diagnostics, manufacturers often flood spec sheets with technical jargon—sometimes pushing the limits of clear communication. This phenomenon, colloquially known as “specmanship,” can obscure critical details that affect the accuracy of current‑signal spectral analysis. Understanding the distinctions between frequency response, frequency range, and frequency resolution is essential for evaluating the true performance of motor testing equipment.
Frequency Response is the degree of accuracy with which a device measures frequency across a specified band. For instance, a motor‑testing unit might claim a frequency response of 10 Hz to 20 kHz with a tolerance of ±3 dB. The smaller the dB tolerance, the flatter and more reliable the response, and consequently, the more trustworthy the measurements.
Frequency Range simply indicates the span of frequencies the equipment can measure, regardless of how flat or accurate that response is. A range of 10 Hz to 20 kHz with a ±10 dB tolerance offers a broader sweep than the previous example, but the higher tolerance means the data may be less dependable.
Frequency Resolution describes how finely the spectrum is divided. Even if a device boasts a 20 kHz range, a resolution of 1 Hz yields only 20,000 discrete points—insufficient for detailed rotor‑bar integrity analysis. A resolution of 0.03 Hz per line, which provides 33 times more detail than a 1 Hz step, is highly recommended for accurate current‑spectrum diagnostics.
