Differential fluid—often called gear oil—lives in the axle housing and is engineered for high‑pressure environments rather than high temperatures, unlike engine oil.
What Differential Fluid Does
It provides:
- Lubrication for clutch packs, gears, and bearings
- Smooth power transfer through ring and pinion gears
- Cooling for the differential housing
Without adequate fluid, metal‑on‑metal contact generates heat, leading to overheating, accelerated wear, and costly repairs. Maintaining proper fluid levels and quality protects against these risks.
Appearance and Types
Differential fluid is thicker than engine oil but visually similar. It comes in two primary forms:
- Mineral oil: a natural, crude oil base.
- Synthetic oil: laboratory‑crafted, engineered for optimal performance and durability.
Rear Differential Fluid
Rear‑wheel‑drive vehicles employ a rear differential and require its specific fluid. Front‑wheel‑drive cars use a transaxle, which combines transmission and differential functions. Most trucks share the same fluid for both the inter‑axle and rear differentials.
Recommended Change Interval
Service intervals vary by manufacturer, so consult your owner’s manual. A common guideline is to replace the fluid every 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Regular changes mitigate friction‑induced heat, preserve gear integrity, and extend the differential’s life.
Consequences of Low Fluid Levels
Insufficient fluid causes the gears to grind, generating metal shavings that can damage the differential. Unlike engines, differentials lack an oil filter, so debris quickly compromises the system.
