Silicon Labs Launches SDR‑Ready Si479x7 Tuners for Global Automotive Digital Radio

Silicon Labs has unveiled the Si479x7 series, the first automotive tuners built on SDR technology to support the Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) standard. These hybrid SDR tuners extend the well‑regarded Global Eagle and Dual Eagle AM/FM receiver family, offering identical pin‑to‑pin compatibility, robust field performance, and cost‑effective bill‑of‑materials compared to older single and dual‑tuner models.

Beyond DRM, Silicon Labs is equipping its existing Si4790x, 1x, 2x, 5x, and 6x families with “SDR‑friendly” features. The new DSP‑driven capabilities—Maximal Ratio Combining (MRC), Digital Automatic Gain Control (AGC), Digital Radio Fast Detect, and Dynamic Zero‑IF I/Q—enable a single radio hardware platform to support every global digital radio standard. This convergence reduces design complexity, speeds qualification, and trims inventory for OEMs and Tier‑1 suppliers.

The expanded portfolio covers AM, FM, Long Wave, Short Wave, Weather Band, HD Radio, DAB (Band III), and DRM, all delivered on Silicon Labs’ industry‑leading RF CMOS architecture. The mixed‑signal, low‑IF design delivers deep sensitivity in weak‑signal environments and superior selectivity and intermodulation immunity when signals are strong.
