Key Factors for Selecting the Right Flange

Key Factors for Selecting the Right Flange

Choosing the correct flange is critical for safe and efficient operation. A flange that does not match the pipe, pressure, or material can lead to costly failures.

1. Flange Type

Identify the flange by its head and face:

Common examples include stainless‑steel 90° flanges and Hastelloy C276 flanges.

2. Size and Geometry

Size depends on the standard (DIN, ANSI, JIS), inner and outer diameters, bolt circle diameter, and number of bolt holes.

3. Thickness

Greater thickness allows the flange to withstand higher pressure and endure more demanding service conditions.

4. Bolt Holes

The bolt hole pattern—number of holes, pitch circle diameter, and hole diameter—determines the flange’s load‑bearing capability.

5. Industry Standards

Flanges are selected to match the standard of the connected equipment (valves, fittings). The three primary standards are DIN, ANSI, and JIS.

6. Pressure Class

Pressure class indicates the maximum allowable working pressure. It must align with the pressure rating of the piping system.

7. Material Selection

Material choice depends on pressure, temperature, moisture, and corrosion exposure. Typical materials are stainless steel, duplex steel, carbon steel, copper‑nickel, and others.
