Bipolar Transistors: Symbols, Types, and Applications

Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs) are a cornerstone of analog and digital electronics. Their circuit symbols are simple yet highly informative.

Two main families exist: NPN and PNP. The symbol for each is identical except for the direction of the arrow on the emitter leg, indicating the conventional current flow.

When drawing large schematics—especially for integrated circuits—engineers often omit the enclosing circle that appears on some textbook symbols. Removing the circle makes it easier to illustrate additional features such as multiple emitters or a dual‑emitter configuration without cluttering the diagram.

This practice is common in IC block diagrams where space is at a premium and the focus is on the transistor’s functional role rather than its individual pin layout.
