JIS vs. Phillips Head Screws: Key Differences Explained

Not all screws use a traditional Phillips head. While Phillips screws are the most common, other types exist, such as JIS, an abbreviation for Japanese Industrial Standard. What Are JIS Screws?
JIS screws are threaded fasteners with a JIS head. They share the four‑slot design of Phillips screws, but to install or remove a JIS fastener you need a dedicated JIS bit. Though the heads look similar, the two styles are not interchangeable and require different screwdriver heads.
JIS screws emerged shortly after the Phillips head was introduced in the mid‑1930s. Henry Phillips’ invention revolutionized manufacturing, and Japanese engineers responded by developing a similar but distinct head, now known as JIS. The design features the same basic shape but includes subtle differences that set it apart.
How They Differ From Phillips Head Screws
The most obvious visual cue is the small dot in the corner of a JIS screw. Phillips heads show only the four cross‑cut slots, whereas JIS heads also have a recessed center spot. That dot is a quick way to identify a JIS fastener.
More importantly, the angle of the four cross‑cut slots differs between the two standards. Because of the altered geometry, a Phillips screwdriver cannot drive a JIS screw, and a JIS screwdriver cannot drive a Phillips screw. Each type has its own dedicated screwdriver, so be sure you have the right tool for the job.
