Renesas Launches RL78/G14 Prototyping Board and BLE Expansion for Rapid IoT Development

Renesas Electronics Corp. has introduced two cost‑effective boards designed to accelerate IoT endpoint development: the RL78/G14 Fast Prototyping Board and the RL78/G1D BLE Module Expansion Board. Both boards bring advanced functionality, streamlined debugging, and wireless connectivity to the prototype stage.

The RL78/G14 MCU, the flagship of the RL78 family, delivers 51.2 DMIPS at 32 MHz, up to 512 KB of flash, 48 KB of RAM, and integrated timers and 8‑bit DACs. It boasts industry‑leading low‑power performance—66 µA/MHz during operation and a standby current of only 240 nA.

These specifications make the prototyping board ideal for motor control, sensor nodes, and a broad spectrum of IoT applications—including home appliances, industrial automation, building management, and healthcare devices.

One standout feature is the on‑board emulator, matching the functionality of Renesas’ E2 Emulator (E2 Lite). By eliminating the need for an external debugger, developers can focus on firmware and hardware integration right from the first prototype. The board exposes all RL78/G14 signal pins and offers Arduino and Pmod connectors for rapid expansion.

For developers targeting battery‑powered sensor networks, the RL78/G14 board can be paired with a Semtech SX1261 or SX1262 LoRa transceiver, enabling long‑range, low‑power communication suitable for extended‑life applications.

Renesas supplies comprehensive design resources—including schematic diagrams, parts lists, user manuals, sample code, and application notes—to streamline the development process. Both boards are available now, priced at $20 for the Fast Prototyping Board and $25 for the BLE Expansion Board.
