Avient Unveils 25% PCR PVB TPEs, Expanding Sustainable ReSound R Portfolio
The latest addition to Avient’s reSound R recycled‑content TPE portfolio features new grades that incorporate 25% post‑consumer recycled (PCR) polyvinyl butyral (PVB). These grades are sourced from reclaimed PVB extracted from broken automotive windshields and laminated architectural glass. The development is the result of a close partnership with Denmark‑based Shark Solutions, whose facilities in Atlanta, GA, and Victorville, CA, specialize in advanced PVB recycling.
Formulated for a Shore A hardness of 45 to 55, the reSound R grades are engineered for general‑purpose use across consumer and automotive sectors. Both injection‑moldable TPEs can be overmolded onto polypropylene (PP) and are available in a natural color that accepts dyeing with ease. Their performance matches that of conventional TPEs, making them ideal for durable consumer goods—grips, personal care items, lawn and garden tools, golf clubs, and footwear—as well as automotive applications that benefit from vibration damping, such as door mats, door‑damping assemblies, and glove boxes.
Annually, an estimated 75 million broken windshields require replacement. Each windshield contains a substantial amount of PVB—often destined for landfills if not diverted. By reclaiming and reprocessing this PVB, Avient transforms a vast waste stream into a high‑quality, non‑toxic raw material that fuels the production of sustainable TPEs with superior properties.
Matt Mitchell, Global Marketing Director for Avient’s Specialty Engineered Materials, explains, “This technology unites advanced material science and innovation to support our customers’ goals and the circular economy. The development opens a pathway to divert mountains of valuable resources from the waste stream and upcycle them into new products that deliver excellent performance and value.”
