The Basics of Vulcanized Rubber

Vulcanized rubber refers to any rubber that has been hardened through a controlled heat and sulfur treatment. During this curing process, the elastomer chains cross‑link, enhancing both strength and elasticity. The result is a material that resists tearing, deformation, and abrasion far better than untreated rubber.

How Vulcanized Rubber Is Made

The production process follows several key steps:

  1. Preparation of the sulfur bath – Rubber is submerged in a solution containing sulfur and selected additives. Pigments for color and accelerators to speed the reaction may also be added.
  2. Shaping – Because vulcanized rubber is already quite resilient, it is molded only after the sulfur bath, ensuring the material takes the desired form.
  3. Heat curing – The molded rubber is then heated in a specialized chamber at 300–400°F (150–200°C). The combination of heat and sulfur completes the cross‑linking reaction, producing a uniform, durable product.
  4. Cooling and finishing – After curing, the rubber is cooled to stabilize its structure before any final trimming or inspection.
